A monodrama on the daily absurd and the quiet rebellion of the heart
Kitchen Counterpoints is a moving monodrama rooted in a profoundly contemporary experience – a woman’s solitude amidst a crowd of duties, memories, and unmet longings.
It tells the story of Maria – an outwardly ordinary woman who, each day, steps into her kitchen and there conducts her most important conversations: with her absent husband, with herself, with a silent table.
Within the minimalist confines of the kitchen unfolds the drama of psychological violence – the kind that leaves no bruises, yet erodes identity. Maria does not scream – she uses irony; she does not flee – she reflects. Her world is a Polish everyday: tea, salt, a pork cutlet sizzling in the pan, and an unfulfilled yearning for something more. The voice of a friend from Italy becomes a symbolic summons to life – to freedom, to dreams, to stepping out of the cultural and emotional circles that confine her.
The monodrama subtly touches upon Polishness – the daily, domestic kind, woven from household chores, learned self-sacrifice, love bound up with renunciation, and irony that shields against despair. Maria is every one of us – a Polish woman who knows the taste of sacrifice and the scent of a meal prepared for someone who will never notice.
Kitchen Counterpoints was awarded Prize and a Special Distinction in the 70th National Recitation Contest in the One-Actor Theatre category (adults) in Poland – a proof that the quiet force of a woman’s voice can move, linger, and stay with its audience. The piece is recommended for monodrama festivals, literary-theatrical events, and intimate artistic stages – anywhere that values emotion, truth, and a deep reflection on the everyday.
